CenterWatch names Bioclinica's RTSM lead, Kevin Bishop, a 'Top Innovator' changing the face of the clinical trials industry

Reducing risk to the clinical supply chain through advanced optimization techniques

We’re delighted to share that Kevin Bishop, who heads up Bioclinica Randomization & Trial Supply Management (RTSM) and leads a team that developed the solution, has been selected by CenterWatch as a 2018 Top Innovator. Kevin is featured in the 25th Anniversary special edition of CenterWatch Monthly for Innovations in a candid discussion in which he describes how Bioclinica is reducing risk to the clinical supply chain through advanced optimization techniques. Bioclinica RTSM allows trial sponsors and contract research organizations (CROs) to significantly improve the management of clinical trial supply. This critical aspect of trials has become more challenging and unpredictable for many reasons, including the globalization of trials and more complex protocols, making it harder to accurately predict drug supply requirements at investigative sites.

Kevin explains that sponsors want to minimize study drug waste to help drive down costs, which can run into millions of dollars each year, while mitigating the possibility of losing patients due to insufficient drug supply. To address these issues, our RTSM software platform allows sponsors and CROs to create an initial forecast for drug supply based on the proposed study design and then adjust those projections with actual patient accrual rates and drug supply needs as the study progresses. Unlike systems that trigger drug supply to investigative sites based on the current-day status of a study, clinical supply optimization modeling allows clinical operations personnel and clinical supply managers to be proactive, giving them the ability to see and predict demand months in advance ─ helping prevent potential supply issues down the road.

Kevin tells CenterWatch about the roots of Bioclinica RTSM, which stem from a collaboration with a leading pharmaceutical company that wanted to integrate their randomization system with other clinical supply chain technologies. Today, the platform has been refined for wide industry use and includes an interactive response system that interoperates with sophisticated clinical supply forecasting and management software to address the full lifecycle of clinical supply management from depot, through sites and ultimately, to patients. Bioclinica RTSM is available as SaaS and PaaS.

As for what's next, Kevin says he sees additional opportunities for boosting the value of RTSM solutions as the use of predictive data analytics evolves. Real-life performance data on sites, patients and supply chains, for example, could inform the design and implementation of future clinical development programs. Access the full CenterWatch article.
